Good Morning,

I am looking for help with filing nitrous oxide (D9230) with medical insurance. The last time I tried filing they said it was inclusive to the oral surgery procedure filed (D7960). Is this a normal response or is there a specific modifier that I should use?

Thank you!

Hi Liz!

Great question. Yes that is a typical response as medical insurance does tend to bundle procedure together that are often done together. Since inhalation of nitrous oxide falls under "minimal sedation", it is typically considered either part of the E&M code or the surgical procedure code.

Hope this helps!
